What keeps happening is where we start.
In a session we work on:
- The small decisions that undo your week
- What you actually felt, named accurately
- Where your attention really went
You made a plan on Sunday for how this week would go, and by Wednesday evening you had quietly made a different one. A tired one. We start by finding the exact point it turned.
You can describe the better week. You have described it several times.
Six doors in
- Life coachingYou can describe the better week. You have described it several times.
- RelationshipsEvery relationship you have runs on the same handful of moves.
- CareerThe job is not the problem. How you are in it might be.
- Communication, including public speakingIt starts with listening. Being understood comes second.
- Young adultsWorking out how to run your own life, with someone whose job is just to help with that.
- Parent & ChildFor parents of an adolescent or adult child who is struggling. One coach works with both of you.
Four rooms. We work in three.
A person is a house with four rooms, and most of us live in one and let the rest go quiet. We would rather show you the whole house and be honest about the door that is not ours.
Mental
Decisions, attention, standards.
How you operate under pressure, and the standards you are actually running to rather than the ones you would name.
Emotional
Noticing what you feel, and naming it accurately.
Disappointment and resentment look the same from outside and do not answer to the same decision.
Spiritual
Mindfulness and meditation. Nothing else.
Attention as a trainable skill, with a boring method. No belief required and none taught.
Physical
Delivered by Fox Fitness.
Training, and it is not ours. We would rather name the door that is not ours than pretend the house has three rooms.

What we do in a session has names.
Plain methods from counselling work, so you know what to ask for and what is happening in the hour.
You do not get better by understanding it. You get better by practising it, looking at how it went, and doing it again.

- One small thing to do
- Tracking what moves

Two coaches, and neither of us started here.
Guiding Light Coaching is a small life coaching practice run by two coaches who came to this work from counselling in treatment settings, working with individuals, groups and families. That background shapes how we work: plainly, one to one, and honest about where coaching stops and other help should start. We coach adults, young adults and families on life, career, relationships and communication.
We will tell you plainly when something needs a clinician rather than a coach.

Is this for me?
Thirty minutes, free, by phone or video. A plain conversation about what is going on, and an honest answer.
- A plain conversation
- Your questions answered
- A straight answer on whether coaching fits
- A sales pitch
- A script or a program
- A commitment to anything
Questions
Is this therapy?
No — this is coaching, a working conversation about how you operate, not therapy, couples or marriage counselling, or family therapy, and it does not address a diagnosable condition. If something you bring up needs a clinician, we say so and help you find one.
Can this be done online, or does it have to be in person?
Yes, either. By video from anywhere in the world, or at your home in Santa Cruz County and across the Bay Area — the same format each week if you prefer.
What does it cost, and is there a discount for veterans?
By video, a single session is $130, or take a block of four ($495), eight ($935) or twelve ($1,325) — the longer the block, the less each session costs, down to $110. At your home it is $180 a session, with blocks from $695. Parent & Child coaching is $1,800 a month across a three-month term. Veterans and first responders get 15% off everything.
How long does coaching take?
There is no fixed program for individual coaching — whatever brought you in usually took years to form; you decide when you are done, and we will tell you plainly if we think you are done sooner than you think. Parent & Child coaching is the exception, and runs as a fixed three-month term.
